World’s Cheapest Car: Boon or Bane?

A topic which made India very proud. Now let us discuss Is it really going to be "People's Car" or be just another market capturing strategy ?

19 comments:

  1. World's Cheapest car TATA NANO is the Revolution in Automobile Industry and from my perspective its a Boon. Its a revoltion made by an Indian in the whole Automobile Industry.Tatas saw, family of 4 person on scooter in rainy season from this point story of 1L car begun, before the lanching of this car no one would have thought that its possible to manufacture Rs. 1L car. It will give chance to common man to own his car and he can enjoy his long drive with family therefore its a "People's Car", after all long drive is not the monopoly of reach peoples.

Now many people thinks that it will hamper the environment, cause traffic jam in metro cities and many other problems. But please be informed that NANO ranked no.1 in fuel efficiency, its government duty to provide parking space, widening of Roads after all government is charging approximately 35% tax on this car. One more duty govt. has to do like building of efficient MTS Mass Transit System, then the People will free to choose which way to go. after all we r claiming its a People Car, if govt. is able to build MTS then we will claim its a "People's MTS"

  2. Guys, before starting this discussion let's give credit where it's due. Yes, Mr. Ratan Tata. (That is if we are alluding to the "Nano" when we say the cheapest car. Believe me there are ample of them even in the remote villages of Punjab, Gujarat and Rajasthan, {Homemade Nano, 29 March, 2009, TOI} not to speak of the numbers in the entire world, which do fit into the parameters by which we define an automobile.) Kudos to Mr. Tata for conceptualising such an unprecedented idea and then actually executing that plan in reality.

Now to enumerate the actual points, some in favour and some against, is I guess a question of your outlook in life. The introduction of Nano on the streets of India would give relief to the people of the stereotyped mindset who believe that vehicles are the privilege of the richer few. And to some extent they are right in thinking so, if you take into account the cost of not just making a purchase, but also of maintaining it. So a 1 lakh car would surely be a so-called escape for them from the tag of being a pedestrian. Socially, it may help dissolve the inconspicuous , but fairly palpable divide that exists between the "car-wallahs" and the ones without them. Well now to look at the other side of the coin, the elite may snub at the idea which make the common masses at par with them. So they may not intrinsically like the notion. But in a nutshell, it is not a bad proposition for both the parties involved, as the latter can surely find good uses of it too, as in quenching their family's younger members' "wind in the hair" attitude.

But looking at the somehow grim side of the story, just think how bad introduction of Nano would be in terms of environment and in turn, health. As it is, we often find ourselves ailing with one or the other pollution-related maladies. And on top of it, to give an access to more resources of such deadly diseases will add more to the jeremiad. Not to mention the problem that writhes every Mumbaikar everyday, that of traffic and congestion. Nano will surely add wheels to our limbs but it may snatch the ease, convenience and freedom of time that we enjoy being a pedestrian.

So I guess, taking a holistic vision, Nano has more demerits to its credit than its positive attributes. But eventually, whether to make it a bane or a boon, is in the hands (pun intended) of the driver.

  3. Dear Tushar J if Nano has more demerits then just give me the answer of 2 questions.
Nano means "Small" the word Nano is originally from Gujrati language.
    1. what made Tatas to Manufacture this car?
its beacuse our governments lack in providing efficient MTS Mass Transit System. Look at the story behind this concept.

    2. Tata Nano milage is 23.6KMPL which is much more than any Luxurious car, there are some cars giving 3.5 KMPL, it just shows 1=6 NANOs, in tems of passenger carrying capacity it is 5=30.
now tell me who should compromise?

regarding traffic and Congestion, look at Germans carparking facility which is technologically boon & India needs to build solid infrastructure work then only traffic problem can be resolved or otherwise today also there is Congestion Problem. so its not a bane, it is actually a boon for majority of people.

Nano is passing all environmental norms Bharat II & III and also for European market Euro-III, therefore there is no caue to call it as a bane.

Next option Tatas are developing is Hybrid fuel car that too smaller cheapest one.

  4. Nano car is a most popular it is the first car which middle class or lower class people can also affords to buy.bcos it staring price is Rs.1 lac. I heard in a news a person who had save a money to buy a bike for himself bcos of nano car lowest price he decide to puchase a car. This car has a feature and attrctive design which attract the consumer plus it cheaper also.

That why nano car is most popular car which is launch by tata motor.

  5. Dear Tushar (without a J),

First of all let me clarify that when I wrote that blog, I had no intention in mind of belittling anyone's calibre or any machine's technical merits. There's not an iota of doubt that Nano (the Gujarti word for the car) is falling anywhere shorter in it's functions than most of the good vehicles of the world are. What I meant to convey was that though the car has it share of all the technically sound attributes as you very accurately pointed out, I was just putting forth the add-ons it will bring along with it as every invention in this world does; whether, good or bad, is a perceptual question.

And one more thing which I would just like to mention without offending anyone's feelings is that most of the plans look very alluring in black and white, but when it comes to actual execution, most of them don't even get kick-started. And if I may enact the role of a reminder, our Government is very apt at this, as is evident from the very could-have-been dreams still lying merely on papers.

    Anyway, thanks for responding.

  6. hey hey its a people's car, nw a middle class family is ready 4 a ride, and hey the bookings r already startd n wat a start!!!any person whose monthly income is between 10000-15000 can own his car in less than a year's time. Its a completely BOON for the indians bcos in any case an entire family of four can go rather than compromising it on 2(in case of a bike). i think nw MBA pass out soon can buy a car in 3-4 mths without paying ant EMI's n soon on the roads v wud find NANO-MANIA. way 2 gooooo........

  7. At this time its quite difficult to judge whether NANO is boon or curse for society, let this car launch in mkt.

However we can figure out few points, some of them are,

Every COIN has two faces HEAD and TAIL, likewise every thing has two branches, ADVANTAGES and DISADVANTAGES, here is same in case of NANO.

ADVANTAGES is tht , the lower class to middle class will able to taste the experience to have a own personal car, which was the main motive of ratan tata("atleast one car to one home" as said by ratan tata). we can say this car as PEOPLE's CAR. however higher middle class has also attracted toward this car, which tells the successes story of this small car.
second advantage is the mileage story of this car which is 23kmpr. its not only cheapest car but also a perfect fuel saver car, logically its ECONOMICALLY. It means SIMPLE TO OWN AND EASY TO MAINTAIN WITHOUT AFFECTING YOUR POCKET MUCH.

As per the record of TATA motors 51000 Forms(for NANO) has been sold.
NOW, in metro cities like MUMBAI, etc., where the INFRASTRUCTURE is not up to the mark, definitely this cars will create panic. there are the other places where the infrastructure is good but again , due to such huge number of car, will create a problem like POLLUTION, traffic jams, etc.,

    ReplyDelete
  8. IT'S TRUE THAT WE DONT HAVE PROPER INFRASTRUCTURE, BUT IF THE GOVERNMENT IS TAKING 20-30% OF TAXES ON THIS CAR, THEN ITS GOVERNEMENT DUTY TO BUILD INFRASTRUCTURE.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Tushar, i respect ur comment, but infrastructure cant b build in short period of time.. its a long term process, wheres the TATA NANO will b on road in few months. so it might create panic in city like MUMBAI.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I agree to you Chetan, but still govt. has not taken any kind of step for building infastructure. And why we are just considering MUMBAI or other metro cities there are many cities/ Rural areas in India as well as globally where Nano can be used.

Atleast if govt. is able to build efficient MTS then also we can stop NANO in our metro cities.

we can consider this car as a export oriented, in developing countries we can sell it, leading to economical boom.

I DONT understand whats the Problem is, whether Rs. 1L car Prize or majority of people can afford this car?

If we consider environental aspect then Currently the situation is like, "Someone is Eating and someone else is paying the Bill for it" this is the Global Situation, therefore the Carbon Credit Market strongly emerged.

  11. TATA NANO , THE PEOPLE'S CAR,IS A REAR ENGINED ,BETTER FUEL EFFICIENCY,FOUR SEATER,BUILT BY TATA MOTORS AIMING MAINLY AT THE INDIAN MARKETS AND MORE SIGNIFICANTLY IT IS THE WORLD'S CHEAPEST CAR.THIS CAR HAS GOT ATTENTION BASICALLY FOR ITS LOW TARGETED PRICE.MR. RATAN TATA THOUGHT OF MAKING THIS CAR MAINLY BECAUSE OF THE MIDDLE CLASS PEOPLE WHO CANNOT AFFORD TO BUY THIS CAR AND ALSO BECAUSE OF THE PEOPLE LIKE IN GUJARAT WHO TAKE THE RISK OF DRIVING A BIKE WITH 4-6 MEMBERS SITTING ON IT.THOUGH IT HAS MANY ADVANTAGES IT HAS DISADVANTAGE ALSO.THIS CAR WOULD CREATE A PANIC IN INDIA.IT WILL LEAD TO TRAFFIC JAMS, AND LOT OF POLLUTION THOUGH IT HAS BETTER FUEL EFFICIENCY BUT THAT WILL NOT END THE POLLUTION.LOT OF PARKING PROBLEMS.

  12. yes TUSHAR, government is not taking any step regarding infrastructure,
but it is also difficult for govt. to figure out exact need for it ,
coz its totally depend on success of NANO.(though forms has
    sold out in great number).

i just heard tht tata motors are planing to introduce electric operating car, this definitely a relief on part of pollution.
this car can b act as BOON for environment, middle class people.

  13. A Beautiful discussion.. While i was reading it, i got to learn so much from you guys.. Tushar (with and without a "J"), chetan, Ruchi, Nehal.. you guys have been fabulous.
Tushar gave it an excellent start, very informative, but just 1 correction buddy.. NANO is not bcos of the gujrati word.. it is because nano refers to something thats very small.. a unit system goes as unit, centi, milli, micro, nano, pico and so on.. nano = 1 X 10^-9
Tushar (with a "J"): a very powerful post.. very informative again.. most of the facts are true and relevant. good job.
Chetan: As usual, fantastic. its just that i was expecting u to conclude this GD but nevermind. u still did a good job. very polite and subtle.
Nisha: Though a small post.. u mentioned abt the design which no1 else did b4 u. good.
Ruchi: Again, a good post. unique and scoring.

Nehal: Only if i could rearrange the posts dear, i wud have kept ur post in the end as it looks like a perfect summary.
    :)

  14. As there are two sides of a coin. It may be boon or it may be bane. Tatas nano car which is the cheapest car cost only 1.34lacs will be boon for a person who cannot afford car which cost rs4/- to rs13/-lacs .it may be curse 4 a person who has high standard of living as if we purchase this car his/her standard will go down. I have heard that Ratan Tata might have seen a family containing 4 members once riding on a bike in rain and surely that ride would contain lot of risk and also it would be uncomfortable for them .so Ratan Tata thought to manufacture a car which contains 5 members, which is also safe affordable by a middle class people.

  15. Yes i agree numerically & by Unit System Nano =10^-9. but before that originally the word NANO is fro Gujrati language.

  16. India, desnsity of its population in its cities is much more than the other parts in nation where we are already facing traffic problem, pollution problem so in such situation world cheapest car like nano which is so cheap just around 1 lac will create more problems. Even lower middle class people and students those who are doing part time job can buy it.Majority of the population of India is youth and middle class people. That means the population of 1 billion country can have their own car so there will be a chaos on the road by traffic jam .so just imagine the consumtion of the fuel it will get increased by 10 times so to fulfill the requirements we will need to import it from outside so the value of Indian currency will decrease and our dependency on the other nation will increase and also It will affect the profit margin of public transportation or it will be difficult to run it.World is already facing green house effect our ozone layer is depleting so instead of reducing the use of car whose milege is much less than bike we are increasing use of it.Even the higgest speed of car is around 100kmp so on the running it on highways while traveling from one city to another city it will take more time to reach the destination so people will more intend to use it in city only so it will increase the traffic problem. So as per my opinion its a bane.

  18. 5 years ago Mr.Ratan Tata declared he would soon to be ruling out a car whose cost would be Rs 1 lac. everyone thought that it was a joke. but Mr. TAta has made it this year.
Nano is out and soon will be ruling indian road. i can definately say that it is going to dominate the indian car market.

i think its a boon to the middle and lower class. as we have seen many people in india are below poverty level. now they even can think big and can think of buying a car.
it has unique features like rear engine and better fuel efficiency, etc.
it may be boon too as it may create traffic jams, more fuel will be needed. parking problems may arise. etc

  19. Mr. Henry Ford was the first person to come up with the idea of people's car. When owning a car was luxury in America, much like it has been in India, Mr. Ford came up with the idea of people's car. This led to Ford Model T.

As my friends truly pointed, it was long over due that this concept came to India. Now every common man can dream of taking his family for a drive. He will not have to struggle his way through trains, buses and rickshaws to get to places. But is that really what will happen?

India suffers with congestion problems due to poor infrastructure and at least every other road in urban area is dug up for one reason or the other. With such issues already in place and better infrastructure seems to be fairy tale. So is it a good idea to bring a cheap car that will surely add to congestion (whatever be the cause - lets face it, congestion is an issue) on the road? It maybe environmentally friendly but would it help reduce the pollution or would it just add to it?

Yes, the government is working on several campaigns wherein they encourage the practice of turning off the car while waiting at the traffic lights. But how many people follow these guidelines?

So finally the common man may not be able to enjoy his drive because of the overload of cars on the poorly maintained roads. He will prefer trains, buses and rickshaws to get to places because his leg will hurt from constantly switching between the break and the clutch.

So the Nano might just stay parked somewhere, maybe even causing more traffic in narrow lanes.

Had India's infrastructure been better - with wider roads and better parking spaces the picture would have been entirely different and this common man would have been able to enjoy the car as much as he deserves it!
