Voting rights to illiterates in India is illogical because it is widely misused.

There are many people in India who dont even know what they are voting for. They do not even understand the difference between Lok sabha and Rajya sabha.. They hardly know who their Prime-minister is.. infact there are quiet a few literate amongst us, even few reading this post, who dont even know who their corporater is.
So, do you think that its appropriate to let people who are illetrate, about our political system to vote??? You may take a stand on either / or, with an appropriate justification.

  1. India is a democratic country every citizen above the age of 18 yrs has the right to vote to select candidate of ones own choice whether one is literate or illiterate doesnt make much diff as one is aware of who would be the best to take care of their responsibility as we have candidates who are ready to take the responsibility of ruling but are not aware about their duties.

  2. Yes, India is the largest democratic country, before taking this topic we shall know what is democracy & who are the illiterates?
Democracy- is the government made by the peoples of the peoples for the peoples.

Illiterates are the peoples who dont know how to write & read. It does not mean that they are unaware about their leaders and they cant elect their leaders.

Every citizen above the age of 18 years has the right to vote irrespctive of whether he is literate or illiterate, he has choice to decide his leaders.
If we look at the percentage of literate peoples exercising voting right is less than illiterates. Does it mean illiterates are voting just because they are misleaded by demagogue. we cant definitely & 100% say,"YES." Actually its the duty of Election commission to educate General public including Literates & illiterates during election period. Because there are many literates who are not aware of their corporators, MPs, MLAs. so it does not make any difference among literates & illterates.
My view is that, "our constitution has given voting right to evry citizen above the age of 18 years" is appropriate & its not illogical.

  3. India being democratic country gives right to each and every elligible citizen of our country to vote.
As rightly said above, even literate people does not even know who they are voting for, who are the persons standing for election locally from their area or locality. Here, can we question our responsible literate citizens for being uneducated/unaware or should we blame our election commission for not imparting sufficient knowledge to every one to know their local corporator?
Dont you think, its more of our duty to know whom are we voting or who are the candidates representing us locally?

  4. According to me, if any literate person having no knowledge of his own constituency is same as being illiterate.
And there are many such people who vote without any knowledge. Hence, we should not deny illetrate people to vote.

Instead, we should try and educate every one about there constituency. Few initiatives have already been taken to educate...there are some sites like Jaagore.com, bleedindia.com etc. which helps us knowing our representatives better.

Hence,'Voting rights to illiterates in India is illogical because it is widely misused' is not tru as explained above.

  6. We have people contesting elections who are illiterate, then why should the people who are illiterate be denied the oppurtunity of voting.we need to understand that poverty and illiteracy are interconnected. If only the educated are allowed to vote, then politicians will direct all promises majorly for the benefit of educated which mostly will be representing the middle and the upper class. The progress and welfare of poor will suffer further widening the gap between rich and poor

  7. U are discussing abt ILLITERATE person?? there are many LITERATE person who dont know the difference between, Lok sabha and Rajya sabha, abt corporater. should they too are not eligible for voting?? of course as my frnd, Anonymous said, every indian citizen hav right to vote, but what the use when they dnt know abt simple politics?? According to me they should make understand the importance of voting.

am agreed with the topic tht its illogical, coz its misused. but what is government doing for tht?

i know am asking a good number of question instead of suggesting points.

    here are some tips....

Government, NGO should conduct seminar to literate them abt politics. the importance od vote.
government shld force the villager to take active part in politics.

IF ITS RIGHT TO VOTE TO EVER INDIAN CITIZEN ABOVE 18 YEAR, THEN ITS ALSO RIGHT TO KNOW ABT POLITICS TO EVERY INDIAN CITIZEN.

  8. rather than educating the illiterates about the entire politics , the government should atleast educate these people few months b4 the elections about the nature of elections, the candidates from different regions with their backgrounds, can also discuss about the problems faced by these people, coz these are the people who keep lots of hope during the elections so rather than considering their votes illogigal the government should play a key role to help them make their vote count.

  9. I completely agree with Ashish, Afiya & Chetan.
There are many literate people who don't know about the candidate standing for the election or about their constituency so isn't it equal to illiterate people??

Every person who is an Indian Citizen and is 18 and above whatever be his qualification, caste, religion has a right to vote.

If a person who has several crimes against his name and is illiterate can stand for election i don't see any harm in illiterates voting.
But yes, they should be explained about the candidates standing in their constituency, the work they have done and what they would do if they were elected.

  10. ya natasha they SHLD explain abt candidates history, what they hav done, what can they do...

a survey which was carried out by Mumbai Mirror last month, 68% MLA's even dont know what are their responsibilities. so its a big question mark what to do next.....!!!!!

  11. i m agreed with Natasha's point. if candidates who stand for election, dont know their rights and responsibilities, then there is no question about the illeteracy of people who are voting.as India is democrecy country, everyone has right to vote and thus people should know how to get aware of their political leaders.

  12. as per my view giving right to illiterate people to vote is logical because just they are illiterate doesn't mean that they don't have the sense to understand or judge anything and it's not that they are not aware of the happenings around. they are capable of deciding whats right for them and whats wrong. moreover they are not born fools who can't understand where they are benefited or who is gonna prove supportive or beneficial to them.
voting right should be given to every one and talking on the issue of misleading of illiterate people then the best solution for this is to simply create political awareness among illiterate.

  13. India is a democratic country where government is made by the people of peoples for the people. Every Indian citizen whose age is above than 18 has the right to vote for electing the best suited candidate. This right does not define whether he should literate or illiterate. So , according to Indian constitution, both have the voting rights.
I does not agree with the statement that voting rights to illiterates is illogical but yes these rights are mostly being misused.
Illiterates are easily mislead by the politicians and their false promises. Sometimes literates too but not so easily, only the style of misleading is different. Illiterates are mislead by the giving them food, clothes and by providing other needs or by making promises like they will be free from loan interest and take their favour in voting. On the other hand, literate ones are mislead by giving them cash, bribe, reduced rates or taxes or by making promises for giving technological things like laptops or tablets. So this is not the point to judge.
Secondly, the literate and intellect are two distinct things. Even illiterates may also know who will be the best elected leader for them.
But most of the illiterates do not even know what is vote, how to vote, whom to vote and why to vote, in this case it is illogical to giving them voting right. While a large group of literates, who know all about voting , do not participate in voting. They think it is a wastage of time or is a act of foolish to vote because all the politicians are crooks and corrupted Some people think that their one vote can not effect the voting result. We can say that they are not aware of the value of vote, even one vote can change the election result.
If we retify the voting rights of illiterates..not give voting rights to illiterate, they feel neglected and can take anti-govt actions which may turn into internal threat to our country. And also being democratic country, equality is one of the principle in our constitution. So we can not take back this right from the illiterate.
But the action that must performed by our government is to provide knowledge about politics, elections, votes etc to the illiterates. And also provide them all the information about the upcoming elections, its candidates and other aspects so that they can judge the political representative and choose the appropriate one as per according to them.
Hence, voting rights to illiterates in India is illogical because it is widely misused, this statement is not completely correct. Yes, voting rights to illiterates are being misused but not giving them voting right is not the solution.
