  1. RTI stands for Right to Information n has been given the status of a fundamental right. Under this act every citizen has freedom of speech n expression n have the right to know how the govt works, what role does it play, what are its functions n so on...RTI came into force on 12th october 2005. RTI Act extends to the whole of India except the state of Jammu n Kashmir.Since every citizen pays taxes thus this act gives them the power n freedom to know how their money is spent.

  2. The Maharashtra and Delhi State level enactments of RTI law are considered to have been the most widely used. The Delhi and J&K Right to Information Acts are still in force, and the latter was amended in 2008 to incorporate features of the (Central) Right to Information Act, 2005. The Act specifies that citizens have a right to:
    • Request any information (as defined).
    • Take copies of documents.
    • inspect documents, works and records.
    • take certified samples of materials of work.
    • obtain information in form of printouts, diskettes, floppies, tapes, video cassettes or in any other electronic mode or through printouts.
Under the Act, all authorities covered must appoint their Public Information Officer (PIO). Any person may submit a request to the PIO for information in writing. It is the PIO's obligation to provide information to citizens of India. In addition, every public authority is required to designate Assistant Public Information Officers (APIOs) to receive RTI requests and appeals for forwarding to the PIOs of their public authority. The citizen making the request is not obliged to disclose any information except his name and contact particulars.
The Act specifies time limits for replying to the request.
    • If the request has been made to the PIO, the reply is to be given within 30 days of receipt.
    • If the request has been made to an APIO, the reply is to be given within 35 days of receipt.
    • If the PIO transfers the request to another public authority (better concerned with the information requested), the time allowed to reply is 30 days but computed from the day after it is received by the PIO of the transferee authority.
    • Information concerning corruption and Human Rights violations by scheduled Security agencies (those listed in the Second Schedule to the Act) is to be provided within 45 days but with the prior approval of the Central Information Commission.
    • However, if life or liberty of any person is involved, the PIO is expected to reply within 48 hours.

  3. as my frnd ruchi and nikhil told, its correct, i would like to elaborate their opinion,

ya its true to say its the one of the sensible act tht govt. of India has introduce, but its hardly on the way of success, very few citizen may b knowing exact use of this act and procedure for requesting information.

to begin with,v shld understand what RTI mean?? its Right To information, in short word - every citizen of india can inspect works of government for tht CITIZEN of INDIA can obtain information in form of printouts, tapes, video cassettes, etc.,

there is the Application Procedure for requesting information, CITIZEN of INDIA can Apply in writing in English or Hindi or in the official language of the area, along with reason and shld pay fees as prescribe.

this is the act v can and v MUST use it,

  4. next question in ur mind is who will give u information?? One or more officers in every Government Department have been made "Public Information Officers" If you want some information, you need to file an application with the PIO. The PIO’s are responsible for collecting information wanted by you and providing that information to you.

  6. again its very unfortunate that an enactement of law is not up to the mark, as against giving the info. by max. 45 days there are many cases in which the information provided is half way correct and incomplete. looking at this social worker Mr. Anna Hazare sat for fasting for unlimited days. if he is facing the problems then what about us as we dont know the proper rules & regulation. for the efficient enactment there shold be one forum whose activity shall be to get the necessary information from govt. Forums base shall be based on Consumer Court, to help the appicant in most efficient way

  7. hey guys, i hav just came across an article in DNA newspaper, i would like to share with u,

people get their work done in many government departments without paying bribes. Ration cards were made, faulty water bills were rectified, old age pensions were restored and many other works were done as soon as the people filed applications to know the status of their applications and the names of the officials who were sitting on their files.

Right to Information is also redefining the relationships between the people and the governments. Till now, the people had to run around the government officials to get any work sanctioned or to get any work done in their area. Not any more. Right to Information provides such critical information and evidence in the hands of the common man that equipped with this evidence, a person is able to take on the most entrenched vested interests.

so plz , as a student (i mean as a younger generation of India), make use of this act if ur work is not getting complete, rather giving bribes.
